Artist Statements

Portrait of a girl:

I made this because I liked the emotion on the face of the girl and how she was dressed in casual clothes. She looks as if she was possibly shocked and doesn't know what to think of something. I wanted to express the blankness of her face and let people decide and interpret it the way they thought.

I created this piece by using pencil on paper. I began with mapping out the face and the body. I then began adding more details to the facial features, the clothes, and the hair. I started to shade over the face very lightly and went over it more and more until I reached the texture I wanted for the smoothness of the face. I shaded in everything else and involved the shadows in the piece.

Chicago drawing:

I made this piece to show the streets of Chicago because I wanted to show what goes on in the city. I put the graffiti to show how people do that to make a statement in the world so people could see it. I wanted the graffiti to stand out more than the other things in the piece because it shows how people can also create art on buildings even though it is against the law. I wanted it to look like a normal, everyday street in the city with the stores and shops.

I created this piece with pencil on paper. I began with drawing the horizon line then drawing a kite shape and outlining the buildings. I placed the doors and windows on the buildings by using a ruler to go to the vanishing points to gain perspective. I shaded everything in the piece to look realistic. I made the graffiti by drawing a box in perspective and then drawing in the box then erasing the box to show the perspective of the graffiti.

Reflecting trees:

The inspiration for this piece came from the enjoyment I have for the beauty of nature. I love how nature looks and I made this piece to show the trees reflecting in the water. This piece was also inspired by a family trip when we went to the mountains and there was a river flowing though with trees all around it. I wanted to make this piece at night because I wanted to show the darkness, as well as the beauty of the river and the trees with the moon reflecting in the water.

I created this piece with a white and blue colored pencil on black paper. I started by mapping everything out, starting with the horizon line. I then began adding white where it needed and leaving shadows and other things black with the paper. I made the reflections in the water by blurring them to show the effect of the water on the shadows of the trees and the reflection of the moon. I showed the texture of the bark in the tree by drawing lines lightly and some darker to show the different values. I struggled with the values of the water and to make it look realistic but I like how the grass turned out with every individual strand coming from the ground.

Snake on the Moon:

The inspiration from this piece is because I wanted to try the style of surrealism and challenge myself. I painted the snake in the piece because I have a pet snake and I wanted to show a snake in my piece because I like snakes and I think people have a negative point of view of them because of media like TV and I wanted to show a snake that doesn't look violent because my pet snake is really calm and not violent whatsoever. I made the moon and space background because I like how the galaxy and the stars look.

I created this piece by mapping it out on a canvas then coloring the objects in with paint. I began to add different values to the moon and the background. I started to add the smaller details and placing every star to balance the piece. I added blue to the space to show the night sky and added detail to the snake and earth.

The hardest part was the mouth of the snake because of how small it is and how big the brush was.

Elements and Principles:

I made this to explain the elements and principles of art. Every piece of art includes at least one element and principle. In this piece I expressed all of the elements and all of the principles. This piece was inspired by the principles and elements used to create artwork. I used the umbrellas to represent them because it comes from a Bring Me The Horizon album with an umbrella with a few raindrops on it. I chose the umbrellas because I like the band and I thought the umbrella was cute.

I created this piece by mapping out the umbrellas and then coloring it in with colored pencils. I then continued to add more and more layers to make it look more full and complete.

Clay Tiki

The inspiration for this piece came from Hawaii's culture and thier tiki sculptures and other art and their geographic location. I made this to show the tiki god of war because of the war going on today with Syria.

I made this piece by using clay and using the slip and score method to make sure that it doesn't fall off when it gets dry. I smoothed out the pieces of the face and other objects.

Watercolor Landscape:

This piece is inspired by my grandma's yard. The driveway to her house looks like that and I took the picture during the fall.

I created this piece by using watercolor to lay down a background and then I began adding more details.
